Incredible Hulk

I went to see The Incredible Hulk last night. I thought it was terrific - the effects, the characterization, the flow, the emotion were all on target. The casting was excellent with one glaring exception: Tim Roth as Emil Blonsky. Whew! Stinky!

Overall the movie's really terrific, and you don't have to stay through the credits to see the cameo. One drawback, however, is that with Marvel now controlling these licenses, it's keeping very close to comic book canon. In one sense that's great because the new movies are pretty true to the comics, but in another it's bad because the absurdity of her origin means we're unlikely to ever see a She-Hulk movie.

Go see it. It's not as good as Iron Man, but it's pretty close.

Update: Slashfilm has an account of the Norton/Marvel dispute.

I love my girl but...

SH has one of the WORST orgin stories ever. Jennifer Walters who HAPPENS to be the cousin of Bruce Banner who HAPPENS to be in town the day Jennifer HAPPENS to be gunned down by Trasks men and Bruce HAPPENS to have the same blood type as his cousin who HAPPENS to turn into a "She Hulk" when attacked by more thugs.

Ugh.

Stan Lee only wrote this to register a copyright and prevent CBS from spinning off a "She Hulk" character of their own. It reads like he wrote it on the back of a napkin.

True to the comic?

That's funny-I don't remember the scene where Norton, as Banner, save Rick Jones and gets caught in the gamma bomb blast. If anything, this origin sequence, played during the credits, is closer to the tv version. So, if there is a She-Hulk movie made, I don't think we'll necessarily see Norton, in a cameo, giving his cousin a blood transfusion. If anything, I could see Jen accidentally getting blood from the blood that Dr.Sterns produced.

They're gonna have to update

They're gonna have to update it... frankly I don't think it should be a direct spinoff of the Hulk just set in the same universe.

Truth

Well, it's true to the comic insofar as the movie is clearly set within the context of a larger Marvel Universe. Also, Banner's initial exposure came from gamma irradiation, he is pursued by General Ross, Sterns and Blonsky are both taken from the comic. I think it's about as close as it could get.

For them to include She-Hulk, she's going to need an entirely revised origin story. There's simply no way that Banner would transfuse his blood - which is a biotoxin - into someone else.

She-Hulk Origin

I'm going to be a little controversial and say the She-Hulk origin deserves some revision. The original was pretty lame, in hindsight.

A more, ahem, sticky point might be how they'd handle her clothes after each change. I mean, with Hulk they're able to sort of get away with the amazing stretchy pants (hell, they even make it a recurring gag in the film), but when She-Hulk's guns go BOOM, it sort of defies belief that any top would stay on there. Maybe they'll do a combination of stretchy pants and really long hair. ;^)

Or maybe she'll just get a suit of unstable molecules from Reed Richards after the first change.

Another potential issue is how to actually portray her as the She-Hulk character on film. Do you go with a complete 3D model, like in Hulk, or do you cast a bodybuilder and do some editing to make her look taller, or something else? I don't know, but that could be a real issue. With Hulk you can get away with him looking pretty monstrous, but She-Hulk has more of a graceful, more human-like (though really tall) appearance. I'm not sure how they'd handle that with a 3D model. Maybe do some kind of transitional thing, like they did with Gollum in LOTR.

Just an idea--the upcoming Avengers movie might be a fun way for Marvel Studios to introduce She-Hulk. Although from what I've heard they are trying to limit the number of superheroes in the first one to keep it manageable.

She Hulk movie

No cgi She-Hulk for me. You cast an actress for Jennifer, and the tallest female bodybuilder that isn't Nicole Bass to play Shulkie. Simple. Done. You want her real tall? Use special effects to make her look taller.
